Reflections of Rhythm is a sound and frequency-responsive light built for independent music venues. A motorised, mirrored reflector spins inside an anodised aluminium body, scattering rhythmic beams of light around a room in time with the music picked up live through a built-in microphone and Raspberry Pi, with no DMX programming or lighting engineer required.By interviewing professional lighting designer Shaun Murphy and researching grassroots venues like those on Old Kent Road, I learned how vital affordable, independent spaces are for community and self-expression. My aim was to give promoters and unrepresented artists the ability to shape atmosphere themselves, helping smaller venues compete with the polish of mega-clubs without needing expensive technical staff.
